Houston Dance Clubs

Anyone who thinks that the dance scene in Texas is limited to the two-step and line dancing would do well to remember these two things: 1) youíre wrong, and 2) stereotyping is rude. Not only has Texas stepped out of the honky-tonk dark ages, the city of Houston is running a dance scene thatís on par with some of the wildest cities around. From clubs styled after upscale Vegas lounges to clubs styled after underground New York nightclubs, the dance clubs in Houston are rich enough in variety to please just about every toe-tapping yahoo that comes through their doors. The commonplace beats of Hip Hop and Top 40 are only some of the styles of music youíll find pumping out of the speakers around here. Almost every genre of music, from old school funk to seductive techno to Euro-lounge to Salsa, has a home in Houston.

300 Westheimer Rd., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.526.8338
The drinks are cheap and the music is always hot at Numbers, one of the oldest—and we guess most decorated—Houston live music and dance clubs. Numbers has seriously been around forever so when we say decorated the last thing we're talking about is the décor. Some of Houston's best up and coming bands have shaken the sound system at Numbers and this live music venue has also hosted some well-repped national acts. The scene is decidedly no frills and no attitude, a place where twenty-somethings not into hip-hop bravado can relax with 50-cent beers, cranked up rock, punk, rockabilly and emo, and dance the night away.

South Beach

810 Pacific St., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.529.7623
Houston's premier gay dance club, South Beach has a definite lock on being the hottest scene around even though they blast the gyrating club crowd with dry ice every hour in attempts to cool off the vibe. There are two very busy bars catering to the hedonistic revelers at South Beach and plenty of eye candy to keep the orbs busy including male exotic dancers and some decidedly un-PG rated video projections. Don't think, however, that because South Beach is primarily a gay club dance mecca there's not a healthy contingent of women and straights soaking up the hot scene, Saturdays especially see about a 50/50 mix.

Suede Lounge

1000 Prairie, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.227.5500
Originally a low key hipster lounge for clubbers that liked conversation over cavorting, Suede Lounge has recently become one of downtown Houston's hottest dance clubs for those that like their swankiness with an edge. By that we mean, you have to check out the cocktail staff at the Suede Lounge; more entertainers than servers, these hotties are a little risqué, dancing on the bar in their high heels and fishnets. However, that's not to say that there aren't other great aspects about this Houston nightclub; the décor is art-deco cool, the drinks flow and the crowd has that "in the know" attitude, but, umm, have you seen the cocktail waitresses at Suede Lounge?
