Houston Local Bars

If anything in specific makes Houston particularly cool, itís the selection of local bars. As random as can be and alive with unique, spunky personalities, these hangouts cover almost every aspect of the entertainment spectrum. Houstonís local bars reflect the cityís multifaceted personality, blending the awkward with the graceful and the gritty with the glamorous. To truly experience the bizarre, eclectic fashion of Houston, stop into Brasil and see what happens when coffee shop grooves meet martini-sipping hipsters, or check out the Cadillac Bar, which looks like a basement but is staffed by waiters wearing tuxedos. LZ Pub and Jax Grill are staples in the lives of locals, and the south-of-the-border vibes conjured by over 50 kinds of tequila at La Cuerva is just plain toxically hypnotic. No matter who you are or how you like to spend your nights out, Houston is supplied with a seemingly limitless list of places to get your own special groove on.

2604 Dunlavy, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.528.1993
Brasil is the perfect melding of artsy coffeehouse and hipster bar in Houston which features some ethnically driven local live music and DJs dropping beats right alongside self styled poets using the small stage for a bully pulpit. Unfortunately at Brasil, the bar aspect isn't as well rounded as the coffeehouse/ healthy eatery one because they only serve beer and wine, but this local Houston bar is a perfect place to kick off an evening with something out of the ordinary to bolster your hipster quotient.

This open-air local Houston bar specializes in friendliness and pool, oh yeah at the C & F Drive Inn they also specialize in that one Texas Icehouse feature that makes them all great: ice-cold beer. The C & F Drive Inn also has plenty of pool table Ďcause nothing goes better with ice-cold beer than shooting some stick.

Cadillac Bar

1802 Shepherd Dr., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.862.2020
Serving good food and drinks with a split personality is what the Cadillac Bar in Houston is all about. If the weirder than your agoraphobic fan-boy neighbor's basement décor doesn't clue you in that this is a unique place to down a drink, then the tuxedo clad waiters whizzing through the cramped bar to the not as cramped main dining room will. All in all Houston's Cadillac Bar is a local bar fave to get sauced, hang with some friends and try to figure out where the designer got their inspiration. We're thinking a combination of tequila and LSD.

1336 Westheimer, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.523.8000
The totally chill Catbirds is a little local Houston bar with an eclectic independent Americana flavor following the sounds emanating from the jukebox. Dark Horse Tavern

2207 Washington Ave., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.426.2442
This comfortable local Houston bar, serves better than average bar food at better than average prices with excellent cocktails to wash it down out of an old 1920s five-and-dime. The eclectic drinking crowd at the Dark Horse Tavern along with the friendly service makes everyone feel welcome, so many park their caboose at the Horse for a while and the inviting attitudes keep them coming back. Also, the Dark Horse Tavern sports one of the best jukeboxes out of the many Houston local bars simply for the fact that certain classic rock albums that dominate the others are blessedly absent.

Dean's Credit Clothing

316 Main Street, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.227.3326
Simply one of the best bar concepts we have ever come across in Houston is embodied in Dean's Credit Clothing—a thrift store and bar rolled into one serving a good looking and hip crowd. Improvised rock bands provide some live music stylings on certain nights at Dean's and when these local bands don't provide music to shop for vintage clothing by, DJs man the decks and fill in the musical spaces with sounds centralized around acid jazz.

Downing Street

2549 Kirby Dr., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.523.2291
The spare interior at Downing Street invites intimate conversations in their secluded booths or on their sumptuous couches while libations are expertly poured from Downing Street's better than well-maintained and stocked bar. A well-heeled, but unpretentious set makes up the regulars at this local Houston bar and lounge, and a walk in humidor keeps a selection of cigars quite comfortable for your smoking pleasure.

Duke of Hollywood Tailors / Char Bar

305 Travis, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.227.5867
One of the coolest places to imbibe in Houston has to be the Duke of Hollywood Tailor shop and Char Bar—a working tailor shop and bar rolled into one. This local bar is also cigar friendly because if you can get a suit tailor made while sipping on some fine liquors it makes total sense that you should be able to puff away on a fine cigar at the same time.

Fat Cat's

4216 Washington Ave., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.869.5263
Little has changed from the old Mary Jane's save the name, a new coat of paint and the improved sound at Fat Cat's, thankfully. The same regulars and college rock aficionados still inhabit the interior on a nightly basis preferring to mix with their own rather than be subjected to newer venues where the crowds and views are more diverse than these hipsters. Homegrown brews and drinks are preferred at Fat Cat's and the crowds down them with zeal.

Flying Saucer Draft Emporium

705 Main Street, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.228.7468
Sporting eighty-five tap beers and bartenders that can tell you the finer points of each and every one, The Flying Saucer Draft Emporium in Houston is a beer lovers dream come true and judging by the crowds packing into this local bar, beer won't be supplanted as the national drink anytime soon despite what wine snobs would have you believe. Also, The Flying Saucer takes care of itsregulars through the UFO club that honors you, your liver and gut with a wall plaque if you down some serious pints. The food, although quite tasty, seems a bit superfluous to us because beer is like liquid food... right?

Griff's Café & Bar

3416 Roseland St., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.528.9912
Before the Houston bar scene explosion there was Griff's Café and Bar, a definitive Houston neighborhood bar landmark that started kicking over forty years ago and shows no signs of letting up. Local sports are huge at Griff's, the Astros, the Rockets and the Texans all get equal fan time from the TVs, staff and the long list of patrons who are considered regulars at this local bar. Also, in something of a coup de grace to other sports bars, Grifff's Café and Bar has itsown open top party bus to haul their boozers to and from home games. This really should be enough for you to put Griff's on your regular drinking tour of Houston, but we'll give you one more reason: St. Patrick's Day—seriously it's one of the biggest celebrations in the state, and that's saying a lot.

Indigo Lounge

2151 Richmond Ave., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.524.5551
Hands down one of the best party scenes in Houston happens nearly every night at the Indigo Lounge where a slightly kitschy, hip ambiance envelops eager clubbers and partiers to get their heads spun by the hot Latin and top forty fueled dancing and celebratory drinking. If you're drinking life has hit somewhat of a rut lately, you owe it to yourself to check out this Houston nightclub because the Indigo Lounge can, without fail, place you on a different path; you know, the one that leads to partying down with butt-loads of hotties.

Jax Grill

1613 Shepherd, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.861.5529
Down home barbeque and raucous partying are the staple at Houston's Jax Grill, that has a great come as you are unpolished feel, some dangerous cocktails and simply grubbing food. Kentucky Club

2707 Fountain View Dr. #2, Houston, Texas; Tel. 832.252.7267
This upscale Houston nightclub and lounge sets the bar remarkably high for other bars aspiring to claim that moniker. The Kentucky Club puts a heavy emphasis on the martini with a list that reads as a boozy encyclopedia, especially when you add the cocktail list addendum. This hip Houston lounge also has more TVs than the local electronics store and some chic designer furniture to park your well-heeled butt on. At the Kentucky Club deep house or techno provides the backdrop for conversations among the cliquish, but unpretentious crowd.

La Carafe

813 Congress St., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.229.9399
Housed in one of Houston's oldest buildings and exuding more low-key romantic charm than any other bar, La Carafe's dark interior and knowledgeable, sommelier-like bar staff make even a wine neophyte feel right at home. The first floor of this hideaway Houston wine bar has a ton of history displayed on the walls and you know it's been here a while because the glowing candles sit atop 3-foot piles of melted wax. Also, the jukebox at La Carafe is one of the best in Houston playing an eclectic mix that suits this wine bar (they also serve beer if you're so inclined) to a tee. And no trip to La Carafe is complete without a trip up the narrow staircase to the balcony on the second floor.

La Cueva Tequila Lounge

This Houston local bar and dance club features themed nights full of dancing and revelry and the spacious dance floor is always crowded with strutters putting on a show. Also, La Cueva Tequila Lounge lives up to the lounge moniker by having a few chill out couches available to park your tequila soaked butt on.

LZ Pub

2239 Richmond Ave., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.522.7118
The LZ Pub is a favorite neighborhood bar during the week for Houston retirees and suburbanites, but when the weekend hits this Houston local bar gets packed with a younger, definitely more boisterous crowd looking to start or continue that weekend bender. The jukebox at the LZ Pub can accommodate both its dichotomous patron sets and the cocktails here are good and stiff no matter who's doing the ordering.

2006 Peden St., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.528.0083
Some of the best bars in Houston are little hard to find spots you have to search for, but these local bars and nightclubs are considered the best because your arduous journey is always well rewarded, Marfreless definitely fits the category of buried treasure. The non-descript building and no signage door lead to a dimly lit, slightly shabby interior where Marfreless has placed several sofas and tables for you and your honey to rest upon. Oh yeah, you should bring a date to this Houston nightclub because nearly everyone else will be coupled up and going at it like highschoolers over their bottles of wine, so, yeah, bring a date. DJs spin some eclectic musical choices that always set the mood and the bartenders pour some heavy cocktails incase you or your date need a little social lubricant.

3200 Kirby, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.526.5595
Mugsy's, reminiscent of a Jazz Age Chicago speakeasy, is a classy Houston local bar that is absolutely perfect for intimate conversation. And, Mugsy's isn't a place where you're going to find those flippant cocktails that are popular today, nope, this bar is a liquid homage to the classic cocktail featuring a wide selection and the self-proclaimed best bloody mary, not only in Houston, but anywhere. Seriously, if you happen to disagree—and be honest—the owner will pay for it out of his own pocket and you just can't beat that kind of guarantee.

A laid back and hip local bar and lounge, Prive takes great care of all their patrons' senses that truly matter. Smooth rhythms bounce around the chic interior from the sound system under the gazes of popesque inspired local artwork and people watching is a definite pastime on their patio thereby taking care of your aural and visual senses. Prive offers cigars—with some legal selections from our little socialist neighbor to the south—for whatever sense cigars are good for and their eclectic menu of cocktails will appeal to your sense of economy imbibing. Prive seriously just gives you that hip lounge atmosphere without all of the pretensions that are plaguing other Houston lounges, so anything else you may derive from this local bar is just icing.

5103 Yale St., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.694.3922
A rowdy local bar that's seen its fair share of Houston drinkers go in on Friday and not be heard from again until Monday morning, the Purple Shadow Lounge seemingly hypnotizes local bar goers with its cheap drinks and endless party. The crowd at the Purple Shadow Lounge ranges, but the one thing for certain is that they all share a common bond: drinking and drinking in Houston.

Shady Tavern

1206 W. 20th St., Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.869.7000
Open air, tiki torches, come as you are with plenty of beer and liquor is the creed that the Shady Tavern lives by. Even though this local Houston bar once hosted a raucous live music scene, and still books bands occasionally, the Shady Tavern has shown no signs of slowing down despite the gentrification of the neighborhood. The Shady tavern is still a local favorite to grab a drink in or watch the game and, sometimes, the haughty neighbors will even join in the revelry.

Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top Lounge

3700 Main Street, Houston, Texas
Basically the chill out room to Houston's venerable hard partying Continental Club, Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top Lounge, while not being as raucous as its adjacent bar brother, is really no slouch when it comes to the hip and boisterous drinking scene. When you step inside to this local Houston bar the décor will definitely make you do a double take, but don't worry, despite the circus atmosphere the only freaks here are the ones you came in with and the only high wire acts are downing canned PBR's while slamming shots. The Beer Cellar probably has the best selection of imported and domestic beer of any local Houston bar and, heck sport, their liquor selection and expert mixologists are right up there at the top as well. Vito's Deckhouse

5810 Beverly Hill, Houston, Texas; Tel. 713.334.8486
As Italian as a Houston local bar can get, Vito's Deckhouse definitely has the food for the job serving deliciously greasy pizza and hugely portioned subs, serving until 1am, in an attempt to put something in your stomach other than their wholly dangerous house specialty cocktails. The real draw at Vito's Deckhouse bar in Houston, besides the food that will remind you of your Italian granny even if you don't have one, is the expansive deck, of course, that gets incredibly packed when the weather's cooperative.
