The Woodlands

In 2003, architects from around the country visited The Woodlands to study its model for success as one of America's most recognized master-planned communities. Just 40 minutes north of Houston on Interstate 45—and minutes from Bush Intercontinental Airport—The Woodlands deserved the honor, since it is far and away Texas' fastest-growing master-planned community.

Woodlands residents are blessed with incredible access to outdoor activities in the region. The area features 1,800 acres of open space, including nearly 100 outdoor parks. One hundred thirty-five miles of wooded pathways connect the many services offered at The Woodlands, which also possesses six award-winning golf courses and two country clubs. The Woodlands Waterway, a 1.25-mile stretch winding through the center of town, is adjacent to the popular Woodlands Mall. The master planners are currently developing a River Walk San Antonio-style "Market Street" to run along the Waterway and further boost the prosperity of the downtown area.

As would befit an area whose motto is "Human. Nature," the Woodlands embraces the spirit of a "small village" along with its ample recreational opportunities. Residents come together for special events such as the free "Star Spangled Salute" concert by the Houston Symphony each Independence Day at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, one of the area's best-known venues. Lighting of the Doves, held annually at Christmas, culminates with the arrival of Santa from the North Pole. Throughout the calendar, The Woodlands plans numerous other community festivals—"Trick or Treat at Panther Creek" and Arbor Day are both popular—to bring together its residents.

While the cost of living in the area is slightly higher than the national average, 14 of the 17 schools within The Woodlands received an "Exemplary" (highest) rating from the Texas Education Agency in 2003-04. Additionally, the area features a renowned hospital in Memorial Hermann The Woodlands, and is regularly patrolled by Montgomery County Sheriff's officers.
