Driving south on Westheimer is a fairly common experience — on your right lies Houston hotspot Taco Milagro, and about one mile down on the other side is Houston Independent School District's Lamar High School, which hosted Broadway legend Tommy Tune last year. You can keep going, but for a spectacular five-minute detour, hook a right onto River Oaks Boulevard, a testament to Houston's big money.
River Oaks is the home base for much of Houston's wealthy elite, from athletes based within the city to oil magnates, lawyers, and businessmen. During the Christmas season, driving the area at night is an amazing spectacle — large, multi-million dollar houses completely covered in bright, white lights and often lavishly adorned with large reindeer or Nativity scenes. River Oaks tends also to be the location of most of Houston's A-List parties, including one last spring featuring over 50 valets to ease traffic and parking issues.
Home prices hover in the low to mid millions range, although apartments are available on the outskirts of River Oaks (often with the "River Oaks" name attached) for extremely affordable prices. The area is also home to St. John's School, a nationally renowned elementary school where the movie Rushmore was filmed.
