Morningside Drive on a Saturday evening is exactly what one might expect — some couples going to dinner and some returning from it walk amongst a slew of college and graduate students spilling out of bars lining either side of the street. Drinks are cheap, and pleasantries abound between friends at each crowded establishment.
So named as the area surrounding Rice University, Rice Village is a social hub of young Houston, as well as a shopping epicenter. While more affordable deals can be found in Houston's suburbs, Rice Village possesses all the major brands in retail, as well as some interesting culinary options. Additionally, all the streets in the area off Kirby Drive are named for colleges or universities — Georgetown, Amherst — which adds to the charming, student-focused feel of the Village.
Housing is necessarily affordable, although living here north of age 30 might not be the wisest idea. While families do settle in this part of Houston, it tends to receive a decent amount of late-night noise complaints, and the bars and restaurants tend to be open later (2 a.m. and beyond) on weekends.
