Pearland

Pearland's promotional motto is "Come for a Visit, and Stay for a Lifetime." It appears to be working, since between the 1990 and 2000 census its population increased more than 200 percent, from 19,000 to 41,000. The area, adjacent to Highway 288 on the south side of Beltway 8, is still largely undeveloped, but offers a 15-minute commute into Houston.

Residents refer to Pearland as the area "where town and country meet," which is a fitting description. The region offers seven local parks and other outdoor venues, such as a swimming pool, golf courses and soccer fields, but is also rapidly growing and adding new commercial property. As Pearland continues to grow, it is likely that most of the undeveloped land along Highway 288 will be used as increased recreational space or retail opportunities for the area.

Pearland is an attractive option for new Houston residents. In addition to having the shortest commute of most major Houston suburbs, the area is arguably the fastest-growing outlying region of America's fourth-largest city. The cost of living hangs around the national average, with prices typically beginning at $250,000. Memorial Hermann Southeast covers medical needs for most Pearland residents, but Houston's Medical Center area is within a 15-minute drive; at the same time, 10 smaller hospitals and numerous private practices are located in the Pearland area.
