When non-locals visit Houston, the exact lines between Midtown and Montrose will probably seem unclear. In fact, the divisions even seem to elude some natives. (A recently closed gas station often referred to by locals as "Midtown Chevron" was actually located the heart of Montrose by the University of St. Thomas.)
No matter where someone defines the beginning or end of Midtown, it's a unique area of Houston, spotted with affordable restaurants and bars, as well as a thriving Vietnamese population. Vietnamese is the third-largest language spoken in city public schools, and the areas off Milam Street are home to numerous Vietnamese immigrants, descendants, dining options, and civic groups.
Midtown's real estate market has shifted to lofts and trendier apartments, which tend to put its prices above the Montrose area. However, amenities abound — several supermarkets are within driving distance, as well as the gargantuan Spec's Liquor Store, where every aisle has a specific alcoholic focus — and like anywhere in Houston, bargains can easily be found.
