Hermann Park Golf Course

The jewel of the Houston municipal course system, Hermann Park has been one of the most heavily played and beloved golf courses in the metro Houston area since 1922. Hermann Park also claims to be the first public course in America to desegregate its greens. The Houston golf course is short, only 6,070 yards, but for its urban park locale, it's plentiful. Can be real slow especially on weekends. Green fees run $20-$30.

Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club

Considered locally as the top golf course in the Houston area, Meadowbrook farms was designed by the legendary Australian Greg Norman and opened in 1999. A recipient of the Golf Digest four-star service recognition as one of the top 50 service courses in the country. The Houston area golf course plays just over 7,100 yards from the tournament tees, and features world-class greens. Green fees run from the $60-$85 is the price range. Call at least 30 days in advance.

Memorial Park Golf Course

The second oldest municipal track in the Houston area, Memorial Park received a much-needed total renovation in 1994 to restore its reputation as a top Texas course. The Houston golf course once played host to the PGA tour's Houston Open, and has seen the likes of Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus. The courses historical original layout was left untouched in the renovation. Houston's Memorial Park Golf Course is a busy course and green fees are in the $25-$35 range.

Old Orchard Golf Club

This old horse farm turned golf course is just 15 minutes from downtown Houston. Considered a throw back course, Old Orchard was built using the features of the land as a template. Hundreds of mature Pecan trees line the fairways and water comes into play on 18 of the 27 championship holes. The Barn/Range combination plays 6,927 yards, the Stables/Barn combo plays 6,888 yards, and the Range/Stables combo comes in at 6,687. Considered by Texas golf publication Gulf Coast Golfer as a top-ten public course in Texas.

The Woodlands Resort and Country Club

The Woodlands features 36 holes of top-notch golf. The Pines course measures 6,881 yards from the pro tees, and features some of the best playing conditions in all of Texas, receiving a four-star Golf Digest rating. The TPC (Tour Players Course) at the Woodlands is comes in at just over 7,000 yards, and holds its place in history as the 17-time host of the Shell Houston Open. Golf at The Woodlands Resort course will cost anywhere from $70-$130.

Tour 18 Golf Course

This golf course just 22 miles from Houston is rare creation. Each hole is a replica, to scale, of a top American golf hole. The most legendary holes in American golf are all playable to the public at Tour 18 year-round. The experience will cost you, but most player reviews are gushing. Green fees are anywhere from $60-$110. This Houston area golf course opened in 1992 and advanced notice is recommended for tee times.
